Of Mice and Men Banned Book Review

In honor of Banned Book week (Sept. 24-Sept 30), the book I read was Of Mice and Men By John Steinbeck (187 pgs)

“Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place,”(Pg 15).

In my opinion I rate this book a 10 out of 10

I would recommend for everyone else to read this book because it touched my heart but it also broke me into little pieces, regardless of that it was a really interesting book to read.

This book is about two migrant workers looking for a better future/life together alone without any family.

Which in many cases happens to many people that migrate somewhere else in the world/country.

I know everybody’s story is different but I thought this book would relate to many migrant works due to anyone being accepted to do agricultural work whether they have a disability or not

One of the two main characters had a mental disability (Lenin) and the other one didn’t have a disability (George).

MINOR SPOILER ALERT

Lenin and George had an unbreakable bond; George protected Lenin with his whole life while they worked at a ranch in Salinas, CA. Lenin was a really big loving guy that liked to touch/grab furry things and because he had a mental disability and he didn’t know how to control his strength when it came down to many thing that involved him grabbing or touching…

It got to the point where everything Lenin touched or grabbed was at risk of danger because he was so strong and he didn’t when to let go or stop.

Everything that occurred in the book was unintentional but you know things happen and especially if you know about mental disabilities you’ll understand

WHY DID THIS BOOK GET BANNED?

According to Study.com Of Mice and Men got banned throughout the country due to vulgar language (profanity), treatment of women (feminism), Euthanasia (killing), and prejudice (racism, mental ability and income).

Because the book contained such concepts many parents and school board members thought that the book wasn’t appropriate for the kids in the age group that it was being read at… maybe if they were older and understood the meaning behind such actions then it wouldn’t have been banned by parents and school board members since the banning occurred certain teachers around the US are banned from using that book in school but other are able to read it as long as its in the appropriate age group.
